Accepted Answer

Drying is the constraint on almost every job in Santa Monica. The fog often doesn't burn off until past noon, so opening windows first thing usually pulls damp air in rather than pushing moisture out. We plan around that. Heavier extraction passes, less water left in the pile, and air movers running while we work. Expect longer than the generic "a few hours" you'll read elsewhere. Expect us to tell you honestly at the door what that day's conditions mean. If you have wall-to-wall carpet over a slab in an apartment, we'll often stage the work so one area dries while we clean the next.

My place is a 1930s bungalow with oak floors and wool area rugs. Can those be cleaned in the house?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes, but we look before we commit. Older wool rugs and jute-backed carpet common in the pre-war housing here are browning-prone if they get over-wet. Cellulosic browning shows up a day or two later, after we've left. On oak floors we also have to think about what's underneath the rug. Depending on the rug's backing, dye stability and how soiled it is, we may recommend a low-moisture in-home cleaning, or moving it off the floor entirely rather than wetting it in place. We'll say which and why before we start.

Why does my carpet look dingy again so fast even though I vacuum?

Accepted Answer

Beach sand and the fine grit that comes off the bluffs and the pier corridor is the usual answer. It's abrasive and it works down to the base of the pile where a household vacuum doesn't reach, so the carpet looks flat and gray rather than stained. It also means traffic lanes near entries wear faster. The other common failure we see is old cleaning residue in rent-stabilized units, left in the fiber over multiple tenancies. It attracts soil and makes carpet re-soil within weeks. That needs to be flushed out, not just cleaned over.

How quickly can you get out here, and do you ever do same-day?

Same-day is sometimes possible, most often for smaller jobs and apartments. We're upfront that Santa Monica scheduling is driven by drying time as much as by our calendar. Afternoon slots dry better than early morning ones, so we protect those, and there are only so many per day. If you call for a pet accident or something you don't want sitting, tell us that on the phone and we'll work you in as early as we can. Otherwise we typically book you within a few days, at a time that gives the carpet the best chance to dry properly.

The estimate is free and you get a firm quote before anyone touches the carpet, so there's no adjusting the number afterward. What moves the price: how much carpeted area there is, whether it's wall-to-wall over slab or area rugs needing separate handling, fiber type (wool is treated differently than synthetic), how much pet urine treatment is involved, and whether we need extra air movers and more time on site because of the damp air. Access matters too, since older apartment buildings here often mean stairs and no close parking. We'll walk the rooms with you and explain what's affecting the number.
